The reason Markowski is so different from the other soldiers is because of a programming error. Markowski’s real personality was accidentally programmed into one of the scientists character and vice versa, meaning the Markowski shown in the movie is just a mild-mannered researcher in a big muscular body.
He’s told several other soldiers about his backstory flashbacks depicting him in the lab working on creating the first batch of cybugs but no one believes him.
